For MTI to conduct analysis, we ask our clients to submit a sample of an ash deposit.
Instructions for submitting a sample are below:
1. Using the table below, determine the amount of sample you will need.
2. Label your samples with any necessary collection information (i.e.
date and location).
3. Send your samples in clean, unbreakable containers along with a letter
explaining analysis requested.
| Analysis | Quantity of Sample Required¹ |
| Bulk Ash Composition | 50 grams |
| CCSEM | <1 - 10 grams of coal or ash |
| Chemical Fractionation | Approximately 225 grams of coal² (1/2 lb.) |
| Proximate Analysis | 115 - 225 grams of coal (4-8 oz.) |
| SEMPC | 5 - 10 grams of ash or deposit |
| Ultimate Analysis | 115 - 225 grams of coal (4-8 oz.) |
| Morphological Analysis | 0.01 - 1000 grams, filter media |
¹ We can often make do with smaller quantities, but these amounts are
recommended.
² Preparation of coal for CCSEM analysis requires that the coal be ground
to the grain size of the coal as it is typically fired. Coal can be ground
to specific requirements at the MTI coal lab.
