Material Testing and Analysis.

Based on our analysis, our clients can identify failure mechanisms of system materials and take steps toward limiting erosion and corrosion.

By limiting these costly system problems, our clients are able to lower operations and maintenance costs.

Applications
MTI's advanced analysis and services are applicable to the following power systems:

Combustion

  • Pulverized and Cyclone-Fired Boilers
  • Bubbling and Circulating Fluidized Bed-Fired Boilers

Gasification

  • Entrained-Flow Gasifiers
  • Fixed-Bed Gasifiers
  • Fluidized Bed Gasifiers
  • Transport Reactors

Environment

  • Electrostatic Precipitators
  • Fabric Filtration
  • Scrubbers
  • Ash Handling

Analytical Methods
MTI uses computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM) to provide quantitative information on the impurities of fuels, and as an accurate means of determining and predicting the effects of ash on power system performance. SEM techniques are also used to identify problematic materials, such as bonding phases in deposits, and the conditions under which they form.

In addition, MTI developed Coal Quality Management System (CQMS) software to calculate advanced indices relating coal characteristics to ash behavior in a coal-fired utility boiler.

Technical Interpretations
Upon completion of analysis, professionals at MTI review the SEM data and other analyses and provide our clients with detailed reports that include summaries of key findings and recommendations for solving specific problems and achieving enhanced power system performance.

About MTI
MTI is a leader in advanced fuel quality analysis and determining the impacts of fuel impurities on power system performance. Since 1992, we have performed more than 1200 commercial projects providing advanced analysis to the power industry, boiler manufacturers, coal companies, researchers, and others.
